DENVER — United Airlines' budget carrier, Ted, will soon rent portable DVD players on its flights as airlines increasingly experiment with handheld electronic devices to keep passengers entertained.

The airlines are looking to compete with JetBlue Airways and Denver-based Frontier Airlines, which offer live satellite television on seatbacks. Renting portable devices would be less expensive.

Ted is teaming with InMotion Pictures, an airport DVD-rental company, to offer the devices and a movie for flights between Denver and Orlando, at $12 each. Passengers rent the players at the gate and return them at their destination city.

Ted previously tested rentals of the digEplayer for $10, but found it took too much time to distribute during flights.

Airline industry consultant Stuart Klaskin said the $12 cost "seems pricey to me."

"The problem is you have JetBlue offering live TV for free," said Klaskin, partner in KKC Aviation Consulting in Miami. Frontier offers live TV for $5.

"And compared to live TV, it's a much more limited selection," he said. "It's a movie instead of getting to flip through channels. The advantage is it gets them more competitive, and they can test this without retrofitting the airplanes. It's much better than nothing."

Chicago-based United, which is in bankruptcy, launched Ted in Denver last February as part of the carrier's effort to fend off growing competition from discount carriers.

A day before the first presidential debate, the government's health policy watchdog raised concerns that early mailings to seniors about the new Medicare prescription discount cards championed by President Bush were confusing or inadequate.

"We found that these beneficiaries received very little mail from drug card sponsors that would enable them to make an informed choice among cards," the Health and Human Services Department inspector general wrote in the Sept. 29 internal memo obtained by The Associated Press.

The inspector general, the department's independent watchdog, is now conducting a more formal investigation to determine whether there are widespread problems after detecting concerns in an informal survey of 59 seniors, many whom were relatives of agency employees.

HHS spokesman William A. Pierce said the department is giving little credence to the initial survey because it was so small and unscientific, and officials will wait for the results of the broader review.

"If I had presented this in college statistics class, I would have been flunked," Pierce said of the initial survey cited in the memo. "The results, whatever they say, are invalid results because this was a non-random, tiny sample."

The temporary drug discount cards -- a frequent topic on the campaign trail and during the three presidential debates -- are the first wave of a two-phase plan to provide 41 million Medicare recipients with prescription insurance coverage by 2006.

The plan is touted by Bush repeatedly as a domestic policy success as he makes his case for a second term in the White House. His Democratic rival, Sen. John Kerry, has argued that the president hasn't done enough to help the elderly with the rising costs of health care.

Both the government and insurers approved by the government for the discount program were permitted this spring to mail to seniors information about the cards designed to give a discount on prescription prices until the Medicare coverage benefit kicks in two years from now.

"Contrary to expectations, during the initial startup of the Drug Card program, we found that the 59 selected beneficiaries received little or no mail about the Drug Card Program from sponsors to assist them in making a choice among drug cards," Assistant Inspector General George Grob wrote in the memo to a top Medicare official.

"Most of the beneficiaries reported they did not receive adequate information about the drug card program through the mail and further the information they received was not easily understood," Grob reported.

Grob also raised concerns that many of the sample 59 seniors had received mail from other prescription drug programs that offered "competing services" and "which might cause beneficiaries to question whether to enroll in the Drug Card program at all."

A week after the report, Grob wrote a follow-up memo saying his office wasn't releasing the information publicly because the initial review was designed as a "very quick and early assessment" and that the results couldn't be used to draw conclusions about the rollout of the prescription discount cards.

Mark McClellan, Bush's Medicare chief, wrote a pointed response to the memo last week, arguing it was improper for the independent, nonpartisan inspector general to write about a survey that was "too small to generalize or draw any conclusions."

"What concerns me even more is what I have learned about the nature of who the IG's office recruited to be in the sample -- family and friends of OIG office staff," the Medicare chief wrote. "This is a non-representative sample and not a valid way to conduct a reliable and statistically valid analysis."

HHS officials said the timing of Grob's memo also raised concerns. The review was conducted in May and June and department officials were verbally briefed in July but the memo wasn't issued until Sept. 29, the day before Bush and Kerry debated the first time.

McClellan and other HHS officials said the initial survey did not capture the impact of an advertising program and direct mail effort by the government this summer that resulted in a 10,000-a-day enrollment spurt for the cards and which gave seniors a toll-free number to learn more.

"The report also makes no mention of what beneficiaries find when they call this number -- a simple, three-step process to sign up for the best card for them," the Medicare chief wrote.

Inspector general's officials said the real benefit of the initial study was to dispel early expectations that seniors were going to be inundated with material about the new program and also to identify "lessons learned" that could be used during the second phase of the Medicare prescription drug plan, documents show.

City officials announced the expansion Tuesday of a program to provide victims of domestic violence with free cell phones, which they can use for everything from calling police in emergencies and making medical appointments to setting up job interviews and finding new housing.

Verizon Wireless donated 350 phones and 3,000 free minutes of airtime for each user enrolled in the program, which is being administered by the city's Department on the Status of Women.

The cell phone program is not new, but it has been beefed up this year with more phones and more free airtime, said Rosario Navarrette of the Commission on the Status of Women. The phones will be distributed to people through agencies in the city that work with domestic violence victims.

One of Fremont's finest restaurants, Pearl's Cafe does a balancing act between country cute and 21st century California sensibilities.

The plain-Jane exterior fades from consciousness the moment one enters the little bungalow that sits between a tax preparer's digs and a beauty emporium. What was probably once a living room is now a dining room, pleasantly furnished in light wood reminiscent of an Austrian wine tavern. Adjacent is another dining room, a cozy area that adjoins the large, slightly ramshackle kitchen. A small garden in the rear has a few more tables shaded by umbrellas.

Chef Christine Fahey, who is part of the group that has owned the 15-year- old restaurant for the past couple of years, aims pretty high, both in preparation and price. A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., whose previous kitchens include Viognier in San Mateo and the Wente Vineyards Restaurant in Livermore, she favors organic, local produce and changes the menu every six weeks to match the season.

On our last visit a couple of weeks ago, pumpkin ruled, both as part of the decor and on the menu, as in a fragrant thick pumpkin/apple soup that could be ordered separately ($5) or be included with a lunch or dinner entree.

The alternative is a house salad ($6, ordered separately), which suffered from leathery lettuces and an odd addition of strawberries on one visit, but was exemplary on a more recent one when the organic greens were crisp, though the whole-leaf treatment for soft lettuces makes for messy eating. The add-ons of cheese, grapes, marinated sweet red onions and candied walnuts achieve the proper balance for a great autumn salad.

The high number of elements is typical of this kitchen, sometimes -- as in this salad -- to good effect, sometimes threatening the palate with overload.

Pan-seared wild salmon ($24.50) with white corn pudding and wilted spinach was a fine dish that didn't really need avocado and tomato coulis as well.

A first course of prosciutto-wrapped prawns served on greens with a peppered goat cheese vinaigrette ($13.50) seemed less than fresh and did not benefit from the addition of melons, which were not fully ripe, anyway.

There are no such problems with the paella in a spicy tomato broth with saffron basmati rice ($27 dinner; $15 lunch). The seafood and sausage are excellent and plentiful. And unlike with many restaurants in a similar price bracket, the portion is ample.

After an appealing appetizer of roasted figs with blue cheese, bacon and a port reduction ($9.75) and one of my favorite main dishes, moist ricotta-and- fruit-stuffed oven-roasted chicken breast with fried polenta and asparagus ($24), I was tempted to skip dessert. I'm glad I didn't. At the suggestion of one of our attentive servers I ordered a Scharffen Berger chocolate brownie (all desserts $6.50) with a generous scoop of ice cream. It was devilishly good, and humongous.

I also liked the homey raspberry-apple crisp with a dollop of cream after a lunch of pumpkin ravioli ($13.95) that were deliciously light, though swimming in an Olympic pool of melted butter.

The staff at Pearl's displays a winning mixture of unpretentious friendliness and expertise. These servers know their menu, and they know the impressive, mostly California, wine list.

Starting with 17 wines by the glass ($6-$13.75), it is extensive, medium to high in markup, but user-friendly, with such identifiers as "light and fruity" in addition to traditional designations.

And whoever puts this list together has a sense of humor, identifying some wines like the Bonny Doon 2000 Le Cigar Volant ($42) as a Killer Blend, or the Niebaum-Coppola 2000 Cabernet Franc ($75) and the Noceto '99 Sangiovese Riserva Amador ($34) as Disgruntled Varietals.

Disgruntled customers should be far and few between at Pearl's.

Water damages are a major cause of high insurance rates. If everyone learned to promptly prevent and correct water leaks, home insurance rates would be lower.

The best strategy is to follow a scientific approach and water principles to identify the cause of the water leaks. Water is coming from some place. Water does not generate by itself. Water flows in the direction of gravity, from higher to lower places. Water is usually continuous and tends to follow surfaces. It jumps only from high to low places (i.e., from a ceiling to a floor).

An important first step in solving a problem is to ask the right question and look in the proper place. Is the water associated with a major rain or snow storm, or is it present during long periods of dry weather? The first fact suggests an external leak; the second an internal leak (i.e., a cracked water pipe). Is the water leak a one time event or a recurring one? The first type suggests water overflow (perhaps your washer or kitchen sink). The second indicates a leaky pipe (a leaky dishwasher, washer, cracked pipe) or carelessness (in taking showers, washing dishes, etc.).

Follow the water trail and water pipes and you will likely find the water leak. Hunt backwards and upwards. Floors and ceilings are not perfectly flat, so try to find the highest place where the water started. Look for water or water marks (for example, small lines of dirt). Once you find the highest place where the water originated, look for a source above or around it.

If your original water path leads you to a wall, look for a source inside the wall. Leaks come from pipes inside the wall or, if it is an outside wall, from cracks in the wall, foundation, siding/brick, or window. If the water marks stop in the middle of a room, a likely source is a leak from above. Look upwards for discoloration on the ceiling or joists. If the water came from the ceiling, diagnosis can be trickyyou dont want to cut giant holes in your ceiling, and while the water may be coming from a pipe directly above, it may be moving along joists and plaster inside the ceiling and discount cellular shades.

Start your search in the center of the worst stained area. You or a contractor might cut a small hole in the damaged portion and use a flashlight to look around (be careful not to cut the pipe or any wires or other structure, like your finger!). Are there pipes above? If so, are they wet? Feel around the hole. Where is it wet? What areas have evidence of water damage? Follow the path of the worst water damage upwards, against gravity, to the source of a water leak.

The way water comes out of the ceiling can give you many clues to its location. If a narrow stream of water comes down, strong and vertical, it means a leaky pipe right (or nearly) above the hole. If the water is coming from the side (or not directly above the hole), it will spill over the hole and spray in multiple directions.

If water drips continuously with the same intensity, the leak is active. If it stops or substantially declines in intensity, there was a pool of accumulated water that could be coming from another location [or someone stopped the water, like stopped taking a shower]. Water accumulated inside the ceiling would be absorbed by insulation and plaster so you might find very little.

If the area near the water leak is already dry, and you run out of clues or water marks, you need to mark where your trail ends, keep it accessible, and perhaps build a few walls or dams to narrow the location of the water origin. Then check the area frequently, daily if possible. Next time you suspect a water leak (rain, snow, you see water droplets), follow the water path backwards (upwards). Case study: the wet basement

For some time, a fictional composite person noticed that part of his basement floor would periodically get wet and that there were several pools of water. The puddles didnt have an obvious source the joists, pipes, walls, etc of the basement showed no evidence of water leaks. So the person purchased industrial superabsorbant water absorbing materials and used them to divide the basement into different zones. Water couldnt move from one zone to another because it would get absorbed.

The next time he found water, the pads near the basement wall were completely saturated, and the ones further away were still dry. That proved that water most likely came from near the wall. Again, he looked above, but the joists and ceiling were dry. So the most likely sources were the outside wall, a heating unit, and the main water pipe bringing water to the house.

Next he made several dams by applying ~1 high caulking on the concrete floor. He put caulking about 1-2 away from the outside wall, so that water coming from the wall would not move into other parts of the basement. He encircled the plastic sleeve of the main water pipe. He also surrounded the heating unit.

After the next rain storm, he found that the circular dam around the main water pipe entrance was filled with water, while the other zones were dry. His diagnosis was that water came through small cracks in the concrete around the main water entrance. By narrowing the likely cause, he was able to have the problem fixed. Otherwise, contractors would just scratch their head and say they could find nothing wrong. Solutions to prevent or treat water leaks

If your tiles are cracked, replace them or cover with appropriate sealant. Periodically (at least every few years) replace the caulking around bathtub, toilet, and other places surrounding pipes. If the caulk looks dirty or moldy or cracked, it is time to change it. This is an easy job described in many books and Internet web sites.

Unsealed grout (between tiles) is porous and can leak water. The grout should be covered with a special sealant that makes it waterproof and protects it from stains. This is an easy but labor intensive job that many builders omit and that should be repeated every few years.

Do not overlook spills caused by children (or adults) in bathrooms and kitchens. The shower curtain (or, if you have a liner, the liner) should be INSIDE the bathtub; otherwise, water runs down the curtain onto the floor. Once water gets on the floor, water will quickly find the lowest point and pass through the floor to the level below. Tell your family members NOT to splash water on the floor, and clean spilled water ASAP. The time to fix the problem is when the first signs of water leaks appear, not when there is a hole in the ceiling If you notice water in an area that should not have it, it is time to find and fix the water leak. If your toilet leaks sometimes, fix it before it causes substantial damage. If you see humid or wet spots, discoloration in the ceiling, or paint peeling, fix it.

If you wait for the plaster to crack, the damage may be too extensive. Water inside a ceiling may be moving along the plaster or wood and damaging other places that you cannot see. It costs less money to fix it before the water ruins a major part of your home (or your neighbors, if you live in a condo). It costs a lot more later and can grow mold.

Once you find a water leak, treat different parts of the problem ASAP. The longer you wait, the worse it gets. While waiting to find the source of the leak (you may need to wait for several leaks to trace the water to its source), repair or remove rotten wood, clean any mold, remove peeling paint,and make preliminary repairs to prevent the damage from spreading. If necessary, cut holes in the wall or ceiling so you can figure it out where it comes from next time there is a water leak. Housework is the last thing I want to do. I've literally swept things under the rug with my foot rather than haul out a vacuum. Happily, I've discovered ways to decorate my home so it requires less cleaning. As you settle into your new home, keep these ideas in mind:

Solid-surface is safest. If you have kids who spill, pets that stain or a husband who tracks in mud, go with wood, laminate or tile floors. You'll have to deal with dust bunnies, but dirt and spills are a breeze to remove. (The Swiffer is a Godsend.)

Crazy about carpet? If kids and pets aren't in the picture, carpet is great. "I recommend using a rug that has the major food group colors in it, like an Oriental with marinara red, spinach green and potato white," says Paula Jhung, author of How to Avoid Housework.

Color it simple. White and pastels show dirt; black and dark colors show dust. Mid-range colors conceal the most. Better yet, outsmart the dirt: One California woman brought a handful of clay-like soil from her yard into a store and asked for carpeting exactly that color.

Faux-ever smudge-free. The visual depth created by sponge-painting, rag-rolling or glazing camouflages a host of offending marks.

Kids' rooms. Focus on the lower half of the walls. Install a chair rail about three feet up, and use a faux finish (or better yet, chalkboard paint) below it.

Banish the blinds. Mini blinds are dust magnets. Instead, opt for roller shades, Roman shades or cellular (honeycomb) shades, which often are treated with a dust-resistant finish.

Fond of fabric? Trade fussy drapes that have dust-catching swags and jabots for ringed, tabbed or grommeted drapes hung on a decorative rod.

Upholstery magic. Choose fabric with enough pattern to camouflage not only pet hair, but a little wine or grape jelly or cheese dip -- whatever your family eats and drinks. With solid colors, a textured fabric like a nubby cotton or chenille is more forgiving of stains than a smooth one.

Refinish your furniture. Patti Barrett, author of Too Busy To Clean, likes rustic-finished furniture because textured surfaces hide dirt and dust. With more traditional furniture, opt for a matte rather than gloss finish.

Drawers and doors. Why dust TVs, stereos and CDs when you can hide them in an entertainment armoire? Choose coffee tables, end tables and nightstands with drawers or doors where you can stash stuff.

Heads up! Unlike table lamps, torcheres and sconces shine light up and away from dusty tables and stained carpets.

Different shades of clean. Replace pleated and/or very dark lampshades, which attract dust and dirt, with mid-tone textured or heathered shades.

Skip the chandelier. If you don't like to clean, forget it. If you want one, choose one without a lot of ornaments on it. Recessed lighting is the best no-fuss choice over a dining table.

Dim the lights. Put dimmer switches on all your lights. When company comes, I just dim everything way down -- it hides the dust.

Countertop confidence. Laminate and solid-surface countertops are easiest to clean. A granite-look or flecked pattern hides stains and spills.

Avoid open shelving. Trade your metal baker's rack for a closed-door hutch. It'll hide both clutter and dust. Cover open cabinet shelves with flat-panel doors (raised-panel doors attract greasy dirt).

Off the hook. Use pegs or hooks instead of towel bars, so you won't have to keep towels neatly folded -- even kids will be more likely to hang them back up.

Light from above. Install wall-mounted swing-arm lamps on either side of a bed. "It keeps the bedside table clear so you don't have to dust around a lamp," Bowden says.

Capitalize on closets. Shelves in the closet free up dresser drawer space for the jewelry and perfume that are normally left out. Child-level shelves in your kids' closet are perfect for toys and games. Close the closet door and the room is clean.

A place for everything. Decorate with organizers: a flat-backed basket on the front doorknob for keys and wallets; an antique coatrack for jackets, hats and purses; a masculine-looking tabletop basket for Dad to stash papers from work.

Consolidate collections. Instead of scattering your Hummel figurines around the room, bring them together on one beautiful tray. The display will be more appealing, the table easier to clean. Or just pare down your collections: It takes a lot less time to clean one big, spectacular vase than five little ones.

All-in-one toy storage. Use colorful laundry baskets that match the decor of your kids' rooms (and the family room) as a catch-all for toys.

If you can't make it look clean, at least make it smell clean. Keep unwrapped scented soaps in your bathrooms and drawers. Stick fresh-scent dryer sheets under sofa cushions. Use light bulb rings that hold aromatic oils. I even have a friend who will run through the house squirting Windex in the air, right before friends come over, to make the house smell clean.

Humidity Keep Your House Cool

Although I lobbied a week ago to turn the furnace on (and lost), I realize that it's just a matter of time before our famous heat and humidity kick in.

At my house, we're not much for air conditioning. We have central air but seldom turn it on. My husband says we don't need it because we live in a stone house and have a lot of huge shade trees.

I say we don't need air conditioning because I don't like being cold. I can tolerate a lot of heat. I'm always freezing. I probably wear sweaters as often in the summer as I do in the winter because it seems that every place I go is frigidly air-conditioned. And I love having the windows open.

Once in a while, when it gets extremely hot and humid, I turn on the air and, of course, I turn it down. Then I get too cold and I turn it off. Then I get hot and I turn it back on. Do you see a pattern? A bad pattern? I'm thinking this is the worst thing I could do.

I recently read somewhere that setting your thermostat at one temperature and leaving it isn't good either.

Determined to get the real scoop on how to best run your A/C, I spoke with Ellen Jenning at BW Heating & Cooling, Mishawaka.

Regarding the subject of whether to turn up and down or not turn up and down, Jenning suggested, "You should keep the temperature in the house relatively constant in the summer. What does 'relatively' constant mean? Within a few degrees -- maybe 3 to 5 degrees at the most.

"Sooo, let's say you have a programmable thermostat, and you want to program it to keep the house at 78 degrees while you are away at work, and 73-75 degrees when you get home from work. That would be fine."

The problem comes with any temperature variations greater than this. When you let the house get really warm and then turn on the A/ C later, trying to cool it down, the air conditioner has to work twice as hard (running longer, using more energy) to cool the house down from such a high temperature and to get all the humidity out.

"It's the battle with humidity that makes the air conditioner work so hard," Jenning says. "You may be able to get the house to the temp you want, but it takes a lot longer to get that humidity out of the air."

Furthermore, an excess of humidity in the home could develop mold.

So, keeping the house at a pretty constant temperature and that lower humidity level is the best thing you could do.

The thermostat should be set to vary no more than 3 to 5 degrees in the summer.

That is not the case with the furnace in the winter, Jenning says.

"You can vary it much more in the winter because it only takes the furnace a short time to bring the temperature up. And, in the winter, you are not fighting the battle with too much humidity."

She gave other tips; they appear to cover anything you'd ever want to know about air conditioning and keeping your home cool on hot days.

Inside your home:

Have your air conditioning system cleaned and inspected annually. A properly and routinely maintained system will operate more efficiently.

A programmable thermostat is a valuable energy-saving accessory. It can be set to raise the house temperature while you are away and to cool it down just before you come home.

Use deflecting shields on wall registers to force cool air up toward the ceiling. Don't block cold air returns with furniture, rugs or other housewares.

Raise the thermostat a couple of degrees. Your body will get used to it quickly, and you will still be comfortable inside the house in summer clothes.

Keep air ducts clean, and replace your furnace filters monthly.

Don't place lamps or TV sets near your thermostat.

Jenning says roughly 40 percent of the heat that builds up inside your home comes in through the windows. So be sure to install white window shades, drapes or blinds to reflect heat away from the house; close curtains or shades on south- and west-facing windows during the day; and make sure the windows and doors have tight seals, to prevent heat from coming inside. Leaks around windows and doors make air conditioners work harder than necessary.

Try these other indoor tips:

Keep lights and computer equipment off when not in use. They generate a lot of heat and waste energy when they're not being used.

An attic fan can help keep super-hot masses of air from building up in the attic and adding unnecessary heat to the home.

For two-story homes, partially close the first-floor registers to force more cool air to the second floor. Gravity will take over, and the cooler air will find its way to the first floor. Temperatures between the first and second floors will be much more even.

Install a ceiling fan to help circulate the air. It will keep the warmer air from collecting at the top of the room and make temperatures more even.

Cook meals on the outside grill, in the microwave or slow cooker to keep the heat out of the kitchen. "Better yet, conserve Mom's energy--eat out!" Now, there's a great idea!

Outside the house, keep high grass, weeds and shrubs away from your air conditioner in order to keep good airflow around it. When mowing, direct grass clippings away from the air conditioner.

Jenning also confirmed one of my husband's theories -- that trees can help. In fact, trees save up to 25 percent of a home's energy for heating and cooling by blocking and absorbing the sun's energy, decreasing heat buildup in your home.

Shrubs and small trees planted around the perimeter of your home can also reduce energy costs. They buffer the wind and provide insulation by creating a dead airspace next to the foundation.

Select and plant shrubs so that when they mature, there will be about one foot of space between the plant and the house. Vines on the house or on a trellis also reduce temperatures in warmer months by shading the exterior surface.

Arranging Your Living Room Furniture

If you are hopelessly lost when thinking beyond shoving your furniture against a wall, or if you've recently bought a six-foot sofa for an eight-foot room, you need help! Here are some easy tips for arranging your living room furniture in ways that make the most of your space:

1. Measure your room. Draw it to scale on graph paper which you can find at your local discount store. Use a in. equal 1 ft. scale. If you can't figure out how to draw out scale, ask your know-it-all teenage son!

2. Mark anything on your room drawing that will affect the arrangement of the room. Outlets, telephone, cable, light switches, windows, doors that open in, the space between windows, and the height of the window sills are all things that should be measured and noted.

3. This is the fun part! Make scale paper cutouts of your furniture (just like cutting out paper dolls!) Use the cutouts to arrange and rearrange the furniture in your room until you are satisfied with the result.

4. Select a focal point of the room. If you have a fireplace, it will nearly always be the focal point. If you have large bookcases, you might make those your focal point or you may choose a sofa with a special painting hung above it. Orient the remaining furniture and the lighting to highlight the focal point.

5. Think about your guests when you arrange the room. The room should promote conversation. Set up cozy areas with a couple of chairs or a loveseat. Ideally, there should be 4-10 ft. between your sofa or loveseat and chairs so that the space doesn't seem cramped. If you move the pieces too far apart, conversation will be difficult.

Other points to remember: leave 14 to 18 inches between the coffee table and the sofa for comfortable leg room (Err on the side of more space!). And make sure you have the traffic lane at least 3 ft. wide to move from one area of the room to another.

Arranging your room on paper allows you to experiment with new looks, new combinations, and new ideas before you move the furniture itself. Not only when you come up with the perfect arrangement for your room, but you'll also save a visit to the chiropractor for your husband or furniture-moving friends!

- Three thousand parts. According to the National Association of Home Builders, that's what the typical home contains. And when you're building a home, you're faced with hundreds of decisions regarding those 3,000 parts. One or two car garage? Carpet or hardwood floors? White or oak cabinets? Paint or wallpaper? Chrome or polished brass fixtures? And the list goes on and on.

While these questions may seem overwhelming at first, it's important to take your time and closely consider each decision you make. And it's not just the major choices that matter when building a home. Equally important, if not more so, are the smaller decisions, such as accessories. Items such as lighting, towel bars, glass shelves and more can make all the difference in a room's decor.

These items make a significant difference in particular areas of the home, especially the bathroom. According to Eric Jungbluth, vice president and general manager of Creative Specialties International, a leading designer and manufacturer in the bath accessory marketplace, "A bathroom is a reflection of a homeowner's personal style. Our research shows consumers truly seek an emotional benefit from their baths ... a sense of comfort, serenity, and of style. The right accessories and finishing touches can add these feelings to the bath in an instant."

But, how do you know where to start? Do certain accessories match a specific decorating theme? What accessory options are available? Read on as we explore the world of accessories.

Accessories 101

We all know that an outfit isn't quite complete until you add the finishing touches. A vintage belt, stylish glasses or brand-new necklace can tie an ensemble together and give it a unique style. So, why stop with your clothing? The right mix of accessories, combined with a splash of creativity, can really make a house a home and show off your own unique style.

But how do you actually accessorize your home? According to Sherry Ruggieri, host of HGTV's Design & Decorating program, "Accessorizing is the art of placing and arranging objects to enrich the style of a room, add personality and most important, create visual interest."

Whether accessorizing a bath or an entire home, a recent survey found style is extremely important to Americans when decorating. The research conducted by Creative Specialties International and Rooms of America, a consumer research organization, determined 74 percent of those surveyed believe style is "very important" to "extremely important" in their overall decorating decisions.

In terms of specific style preferences, the survey found consumers typically decorate in three primary thematic approaches: country, casual/contemporary and traditional. Thirty-eight percent of the population decorates in a casual style (also referred to as contemporary); following closely behind, 35 percent of consumers choose a traditional style of decorating; lastly, 27 percent of Americans decorate in a country theme, which includes secondary themes such as Shaker, Country French and Mission.

Accessorizing the Bath

Once you have a style chosen for your home, how do you translate that into the bath? Where do you start? And what types of accessories should be chosen?

An important tip, according to Jungbluth, is to remember there are no rules when it comes to accessorizing the bath. "If your family room and kitchen are decorated in a traditional theme, it doesn't mean you necessarily have to accessorize your bathroom in the same style. It's a personal decision -- experiment with different looks and determine which style combination works best for your home."

In terms of accessorizing the bath, where should you start? Recently, on HGTV's Web site, host Joan Kohn asked two well-known designers for their "words of wisdom" when it comes to creating different looks in the bath, simply with accessories. According to designers Jean Zoller and Nancy Redifer, it's as easy as "1, 2, 3":

1. The first design decision to be made in any bath is the type of tub to be used, since it must be installed before the walls and windows go up. The color chosen for the tub will affect the rest of the color choices in the room.

2. If neutral colors are chosen for the large elements that form the background in the bath -- walls, floor, fixtures -- it's easy to change the room's looks, simply with accessories.

3. Accessories for the bath include candles, towel rings, plants, mirrors, robe hooks, glass shelves and more. Color can also be used as an accessory, with deeper colors being more traditional, while lighter colors have a more contemporary feel.

Jungbluth offered a final tip when choosing accessories, "Think of traditional accessories in untraditional ways. Try placing a grouping of different accessories together on a wall -- perhaps a towel bar, glass shelf and robe hook. The combination of the varying sizes and textures can add an interesting flavor to a room."

Choices Abound

Until recently, chrome or polished brass were the only finish choices in the bath accessory marketplace. Fortunately, the industry has changed dramatically in the last decade, and manufacturers now offer dozens of finish and style options in bath accessories.

"The bath accessory marketplace has really come to life in the last few years," added Jungbluth. "Consumers today have more choices than ever before. From 'retro' styles in oil-rubbed bronze to contemporary designs in brushed chrome - dramatic wrought iron finishes and even accessories made in maple and oak, homeowners have a wide variety of new and innovative design options for the bath."

With all of the new options, Americans still hold true to a traditional finish. According to the aforementioned survey, chrome is still the most popular bath accessory finish, but consumers' second choice, brushed nickel, is on the rise. In addition, other finishes, such as oil-rubbed bronze and wrought iron, are also increasing in popularity with consumers. In fact, non-chrome finishes now represent almost half of bath accessory sales.

A wallpaper border is a good start when looking for a theme because it serves as an inspiration for accessorizing and can be easily changed when a new decorating scheme strikes your fancy. Flea markets and rummage sales supply many useful items. Old blankets are great as throws or winter curtain panels; colorful vintage 1950s printed tablecloths can be used for quick pillow covers or window toppers; and fishing lures, hunting caps and boating gear, grouped as wall art or on a display shelf, make interesting conversation starters. It is surprising how many of these items can be found at bargain prices.

The lodge look has much to do with color and texture. Every spot in nature has a unique color palette. These are the dark greens and browns of the forest, but also the lighter hues of golden grass and seaside retreats, of ivory birch, the silver grays of aged barn board and sage. Green is important in this decor and nothing brings the outdoors inside better. Green will make other colors in the room shine. A dark hunter green wall covering of faux leather paired with a red Persian rug and a watch plaid fabric will welcome anyone into the room. However for tranquility and serenity, decorate with neutrals or soft colors -- buttery creams matched with a soft olive; the retro-inspired avocado green looks wonderful when combined with a wallpaper border of baskets and pottery. A mountain lake border scene of blue skies, green pines, moose and loons make a wonderful theme for the combination of blues and greens.

Intermix any and all natural, unpainted woods. Mission or Arts and Craft style furniture blends well with this look because of its straight lines and its design credo of form following function. Wicker, unpainted or protected with a sealer, is classic. Twig furniture, inspired by 18th century English garden furniture, can be romantically rustic, but try it as an accent at first, such as a side chair or a table; these pieces are not always comfortable. There should be minimal detailing in the large pieces, but worn finishes work well. Use old trunks and stacked vintage suitcases as coffee or side tables. This gives a dual purpose of horizontal surfaces for display and hidden storage.

Don't have a lot of great wall art? Buy an old frame at a garage sale or flea market and hang it up. The texture of the frame will often stand alone. If wooden, paneled walls are desired but too expensive, try a wallcovering designed to look like old barn boards. Hang the paper horizontally under a chair rail on a short wall to visually lengthen it, or use on the fifth wall, the ceiling. Mix pottery with baskets, old books and candlesticks.

Assemble family photographs, especially black and white or sepia tones, around a twig-framed or bark mirror, each photo adorned with simple found twigs. Add some rustic wall sconces and a small room seems larger and a focal point is created in a large room. Instead of hanging a painting or print, try leaning it casually against a wall or mantle; it is easier to change out with the seasons or when a different one catches your eye. Consider exposed beams as a perch to showcase family collections or hang dried flowers or herbs. Even large items, such as a canoe, can be hung for view. Rooms that are not symmetrical lend themselves the best to unexpected and unusual treatments.

Be careful, though, not to overdo those finishing touches, and remember that a well-decorated home balances highly decorated areas with plain, simple spaces, such as a bowl of fruit on an otherwise unadorned table. It is important that no one space dominates or competes with another; good design knows when to stop.

Cannot be all work and no pie here at discount cellular

If you want a quick, spur of the moment pie...
use the Pillsbury Pie Crust that's in the refrigerated
section at the grocery. While I prefer a home-made pate
brisee crust, I also prefer pie fast when I have a hankering
with less forethought and planning. So I always keep a
package in my fridge just in case I get the urge.

Use only COLD ingredients. Refrigerate your flour. Cut the
butter and/or shortening into 1/4 inch pieces and refrigerate
until well chilled. Use ice water...but no ice cubes in the
water. Little ice chunks will make a soggy crust.

For a lattice top, make the lattice first. Roll out the
dough in a rectangular shape, not a circle. Cut the strips
and put into the freezer while you roll out the bottom crust.
I use a floured piece of wax paper so it's easy to transport.

* PEELING THE PEACHES
With a paring knife, score a small x at the base of each
peach.

Lower peaches into boiling water with a slotted skimmer.
Cover and blanch until their skins loosen, about 2 minutes.

Use a slotted skimmer to remove the peaches to ice water
and let stand to stop cooking, about one minute. Cool the
peaches, then, starting from the scored x, peel each peach,
halve and pit it, and cut into 3/8-inch slices.

A little fresh lemon juice sprinkled over the slices will
keep them from turning brown.

* FRESH PEACH PIE

If your peaches are larger than tennis balls, you will prob-
ably need 5 or 6; if they're smaller, you will need 7 to 8.
Cling and freestone peaches look identical; try to buy free-
stones, because the flesh will fall away from the pits
easily.

Potato starch can usually be found in the Kosher section
of the supermarket. If you don't have or can't find potato
starch, substitute an equal amount of pulverized Minute
tapioca.

Serve the pie with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

PEACH FILLING
6-7 ripe medium-sized peaches (about 6 cups)
1 tablespoon juice from 1 lemon
1 cup sugar, plus 1 tablespoon
Pinch ground cinnamon
Pinch ground nutmeg
Pinch salt
3-4 tablespoons potato starch (or substitute
pulverized Minute tapioca)

Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position and heat oven to
425 degrees

Toss peach slices, lemon juice, 1 cup sugar, cinnamon, nut-
meg, salt, and potato starch or Minute tapioca (3 table-
spoons for moderately juicy peaches, 4 tablespoons for very
juicy ones) in medium bowl.

Turn mixture into dough-lined pie plate. Remove dough strips
from freezer; if too stiff to be workable, let stand at room
temperature until malleable and softened slightly but still
very cold. Form lattice top and place on top of peaches.
Lightly brush lattice top with 1 tablespoon water and
sprinkle with remaining 1 tablespoon sugar.

Place pie on baking sheet and bake until crust is set and
begins to brown, about 25 minutes. Rotate pie and reduce
oven temperature to 375 degrees; continue to bake until
crust is deep golden brown and filling is bubbly, 25 to 30
minutes longer.

Cool on wire rack 2 hours before serving.

I use this recipe, too. It's very nice. It has a bit more
grown up flavor

* VANILLA-GINGER PEACH PIE

Choose ripe yellow peaches rather than white ones for pie
filling; they are juicier and sweet-tart. Cut them into thick
wedges, which add texture to the filling and are less likely
to lose their shape.

1/4 cup quick-cooking tapioca
1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise, then scrape the seeds for
filling 1 tablespoon minced candied ginger
3 pounds firm, ripe yellow peaches, peeled and cut into 3/4-
inch wedges 3/4 cup plus 3 tablespoons sugar

Choose ripe yellow peaches rather than white ones for pie
filling; they are juicier and sweet-tart. Cut them into
thick wedges, which add texture to the filling and are less
likely to lose their shape.

Interior building materials like wood, particle board and laminates, furniture and wall coverings, people and pets, cleaning substances, the condition of heating and air conditioning, life activities like smoking and cooking, dust and dust mites, and of course the outdoor air. Interior finishes and building materials have the potential to affect indoor air quality because they emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Scientific studies have shown that new carpet is one of the lowest emitters of VOCs into the indoor environment, and these emissions dissipate very quickly -- within 48 to 72 hours after installation with good ventilation.

Carpet's holding characteristics actually make it a floor covering of choice for allergy sufferers. House dust, pollen and dust mites are a constant challenge in the home. They are found in the highest concentration in mattresses and bedding. The key in preventing reactions to these pollutants is to keep the allergen particles from getting into the breathing zone. Gravity causes airborne particles to fall to the floor and the benefit of a carpeted floor is that the dust, dirt and particles are retained in the carpet until they can be removed by vacuuming. It is the airborne particles that affect those sensitive individuals, not the particles that are held in the carpet. Therefore, the holding characteristics of carpet, as compared to a smooth surface floor, keep particles from circulating around in the room due to foot traffic and airflow.

Vacuuming is the single most effective and economical means of keeping floor coverings clean and removing dust and allergens from the indoor environment. It has been proven that 90 percent to 95 percent of all dry soil by weight can be removed from carpet by routine vacuuming. In addition to vacuuming, keeping the humidity low (below 55 percent) and using heating, air conditioning and possibly a dehumidifier is important. In an office environment, dust, pollen, skin particles and other office material particles circulate in the air and must also be removed by routine maintenance and effective ventilation.

The key, however, to removing the particles collected in the carpet is to vacuum routinely with a high quality vacuum cleaner that has adjustable brushes and bears the Carpet and Rug Institute's Green Label. Those commercial and residential vacuum cleaners have passed stringent tests in three areas: soil removal, containing the dust within the filter bag and maintaining the carpet's appearance. As noted in Architectural Review Magazine, "... the fact that carpet may hold more lint and dust than a smooth surface may be considered an advantage as it is better to have dust particles held down in the carpet until it is vacuumed, than to have it stirred up and airborne by continual shuffling of shoes -- as is the case with smooth surfaces."

According to many allergists, the real cure for sniffling, sneezing and wheezing may be as simple as consistent, regular house cleaning. Common household allergens such as dust, dust mites, mold, pet dander and cockroach allergen can trigger allergies. Dr. Mary Lasley, a pediatric allergist, explains, "Simple changes in your routine house cleaning can reduce allergies and help your family live more comfortably. Removing dust and soil often from all surfaces is a key element in maintaining good indoor air quality." It has been recommended that carpet be vacuumed once a week for every person and large pet that lives in the home. Commercial recommendations are based on the number of foot traffics and individuals who occupy the offices.

In response to some individuals who worried that their carpet might be the cause of allergic reactions, comparison data from a 10-year study in Sweden by the scientists at the Swedish Institute of Fibre and Polymer Research, found that there is no link between carpet usage and the incidence of asthma or allergies. What they did find was that even though carpet usage had steadily decreased since 1975, the occurrences of allergic reactions in the general population had increased.

In some situations people have perceived that carpet may have a negative impact on the indoor air quality. It has been shown that removing carpet does not impact the amount of allergies or asthma. Dr. Scott Schroeder, a pediatrician from Bronx, New York, noted that carpet was removed in the Bronx, New York School System and that it had no impact on the increase of asthma in the students there.

Carpet itself is not a source of mold and mildew without dirt and moisture. Visible mold is a manifestation of inadequate maintenance, excess moisture problems and poor HVAC ventilation. A recent research study of six Florida schools by Host/Racine Industries determined that mold and mildew are not associated with a particular surface, such as carpet. Eliminating sources of excessive moisture, such as water leaks, moldy HVAC ducts and humidity problems caused by turning off air conditioning in the night were steps that needed to be taken along with a concentrated effort to reduce humidity in the building.

DuPont in their White Paper entitled "Carpet and Indoor Air Quality" discussed bioaerosols from older carpet: "For older carpet, the area of concern is airborne suspension of irritants or allergenic material that either grows or accumulates in the carpet over time. With regard to the "growth" of microorganisms in carpet, we know that this does not occur to any significant extent at a relative humidity below 65 percent or in the absence of water leaks. In situations where humidity is high or water has intruded into the building, the potential for mold growth is greater regardless of flooring material. While biological materials can "accumulate" in carpet, it has been argued that carpet may actually be a benefit, since it traps and holds soils and dusts. Obviously, it becomes necessary to routinely remove this debris from the carpet via vacuum cleaning and periodic deep cleaning."

Europe already ahead of the United States in many ways

- Recent water restrictions throughout the country and memories of last summer's rolling blackouts in California and elsewhere are calling consumers' attention to more energy efficient household appliances. Washing machines use by far the largest amount of water of any appliance, with a typical top-loading washing machine using around 45 gallons of water per load.

Consumers who are concerned with conserving natural resources are discovering the benefits of front-loading washing machines. These machines use up to 30 percent less water than top-loading machines, and consume 50 percent less electricity. They also use much less laundry detergent, which not only saves money, but saves the environment as well.

Front-loading washing machines clean by tumbling and compression. Like a clothes dryer, its drum rotates about the horizontal axis, prodding laundry through a tiny pool of water. This process is much gentler on clothes than a top-loading washer, which cleans clothes by twisting and turning them back and forth with an agitator. That means your favorite shirt will last a little longer. Despite all these features, front-loading machines are associated mainly with laundromats in the minds of American consumers. However, they have been popular in Europe for nearly a century.

According to Lynda Coyle, marketing manager for Miele USA, a top German appliance manufacturer, people shopping for new washers, dryers and dishwashers are looking more carefully than ever at the machine's energy usage and ability to conserve natural resources.

Miele washers go a step further than American-made machines by including features such as higher spinning speeds that extract 65 percent of moisture and a special built-in water heater. This means less drying time (and more electricity savings) and better cleaning power without the use of bleach or harsh detergents.

"There seems to be a genuine concern not only for saving money but also for the long-term health of the environment in general," says Coyle, noting that European countries have been well ahead of the United States in this regard for many years. "Our customers are not only asking about everyday water and energy efficiency but about the ability to recycle the appliance in the future," she said.

Miele appliances use raw materials for construction that can be recycled later. While the company uses as many metal parts as possible, those parts that are plastic are labeled as such so they can be easily identified when recycling occurs.

The company is credited with introducing the first mechanical clothes washer in 1901, and has always been committed to making its appliances as environmentally economical as possible. During the past 20 years, for example, Miele's designs have reduced water and electricity consumption in its washing machines by 70 percent and its dishwashers have been improved to use 72 percent less water and 53 percent less electricity. This year the company became the first in the world to install a biological commercial laundry system that recycles 95 percent of used water (see sidebar item).

In order to ensure that its appliances -- which have a life expectancy of 20 years -- remain economical and efficient, Miele developed a PC-based electronic Update Feature in 1995 that transfers new programs to the machine as often as desired. The feature, which is similar to software upgrades on a computer, allows programs to be transferred to the appliance's electronic controls.

Miele's other appliances also feature energy-saving designs. The company's dishwashers use a maximum of 6.3 gallons, with many programs using 5 gallons or less, compared to 7 to 10 gallons for the majority of machines on the market. A unique Top Solo function allows water to go to top and side sprayers only and uses just 3.2 gallons of water. Certain models also are equipped with an Ecosensor, which evaluates the water for particle content and can reuse it for later stages.

Miele's dryers are designed to save energy too by relying on moisture sensors rather than timers to ensure proper cycle length. A drum that rotates in both directions prevents clothes from balling in the machine and helps reduce drying time.

In addition to washers, dryers and dishwashers, Miele manufactures a full line of household appliances including built-in true European Convection ovens, electric and gas cooktops and hoods, built-in coffee systems and vacuum cleaners.

SIDE BAR:First Biological Laundry System Recycles Water By 95 PercentMiele recently introduced the world's first biological communal laundry system in a 500-person apartment building in Denmark.

The system recycles 95 percent of the used water utilizing biological concepts. The entire process takes six days and is done on-site in the laundry room in a glass-enclosed area that looks more like a greenhouse than a water filtration system.

First, the used water is pumped into three basins to allow maximum separation of suspended particles. The water then passes into six tanks containing aquatic plants in which microorganisms degrade smaller particles into the water. Any remaining bacteria are then killed using UV light. The water returned for use is equivalent to potable water.

Not only does the system save water and money but it also prevents discharge of effluents that may be hazardous to the environment.

Consumers Decorate in Style with Lighting

- The wallpaper is up. The drapes are hung, and the furniture is in place. But something is missing. Decorating is not complete without a selection of stylish lighting to seamlessly finish the look.

There was a time when lighting did not have the decorating value that it has today. The choices were few and the styles limited. Now, consumers can find a floor lamp, table-lamp, chandelier, pendant or sconce to fit their decor, no matter what the room.

"The industry has evolved," says Monty Gilbertson, CLC, manager of Lighting Design by Wettstein's in Lacrosse, Wis. "There was a time 10 to 12 years ago when lighting was in a rut. In the last few years -- really five to eight -- it has turned almost into more of an apparel-type market, where on a year-to-year basis there can be some hot spots. There are a lot of new looks every year."

Today's looks follow four major developments, according to the experts at the American Lighting Association (ALA).

1. Softer metals. Blame it on the millennium. The new century has brought with it a diverse selection of softer metallic finishes. Brushed nickel, stainless steel, pewter, even brushed copper, have done their best to dethrone brass as the top finish choice. The softer tones of these gray metals make it easier for a lamp to blend with a multi-toned interior, according to Dan Blitzer, the American Lighting Association's technical lighting consultant.

2. Painted finishes. The availability of multi-toned, colored finishes offers consumers lamps with more depth and texture -- a trend that has come about from the joining of style and technology. Manufacturers now have the ability to elegantly apply layers of color to create the finish. The resulting look fits well with traditional styles and allows the fixture to blend with many colors in a room. Expect to find colored finishes with a soft tone that may include gold or silver flecks and tones of brown and red. Don't forget about white, too, says Gilbertson. Textured white finishes are also widely popular.

3. More authenticity. Developing hand-in-hand with painted finishes, are weathered finishes and patinas, which offer a unique, timeless look. "This is the next antique brass," says Gilbertson. "It's a soft, traditional look." The style has become more distinguished and authentic with changing technology. "[This finish] enables you to combine contemporary lighting with traditional furnishings, without having to resort to a formal, traditionally-styled chandelier, which may be too heavy visually," says Blitzer. Many of the painted finishes look so much like an original weathered finish that the consumer won't be able to tell, says Todd Langner, vice president of marketing and product development for Kichler in Cleveland. "The whole array of darker, richer bronzes is still very, very strong," he says.

4. Better detail. "Today's fixtures are more refined," says Blitzer. "There's more attention to detail." Nearly every aspect of the lamp, from the base to the pull chain, has earned more decorative detail, giving the lamps greater sophistication. Small details have increased the volume of choices for the consumer and have made it easier for the buyer to find a distinct style for their home.

"A lamp should be as interesting and as pretty without the light," says home furnishings and lighting designer Sergio Orozco, owner of Sergio Orozco Designs Inc., in West New York, N.J. "That is the ultimate objective. That way, it is an accessory. The objective here is to make each luminary a piece of architecture."
Top It Off
It isn't possible to consider the weight of lighting in home decor without considering one the lamp's most decorative features -- the lampshade. It, too, has evolved from the days of limited choices.

"Lampshades have gone bonkers," says Gilbertson. "There are all these eclectic shades. It has just exploded."
Shades have taken on a more decorative look with a variety of shapes, fabrics, and adornments. Materials from metal and paper to tapestry and sheers have made it onto shades. Beads, stones, wire, fringe, and myriad accoutrements create an added flare to many designs. Nearly anything --within safety guidelines -- can be found atop a lampshade.

"We're all designing in a tremendous amount of additional detail," says Langner. "That does include a lot of hanging ornaments on the shade, whether it is crystal or beads or whatever. It's been a growing trend for several years."
No longer is the A-frame shade the only choice, either. Certainly, the off-white silk shade in its traditional form is available, but why stop there when you can customize a lamp with shades shaped in cylinders, spheres, rectangles, and squares. Many shades are also designed to fit uniquely with the lamp's overall design.

"If [manufacturers] don't have unique shades today, [they] are off, off the market," says Orozco. "The development of techniques and technology has taken [designers] outside of the square box. It's developed into a trend that has become fashionable. And, now I think it has become an art form."
When it comes to decorating a home, lighting certainly can't be left out. A well-chosen lamp may make all the difference. And finding the right one shouldn't be too difficult.

"Lighting has changed dramatically," says Gilbertson. "And, of course, it does a dramatic thing for your house. [Remember], it is how it's done that can make a world of difference."

- Whether it's used for paying household bills, mastering schoolwork, or building an entrepreneurial empire, the home office is rapidly taking its place as one of the most important rooms in the house.

By the end of 2001, more than 55 million people worked from home, according to the National Association of Home Based Businesses (NAHHB). In "What 21st Century Home Buyers Want," a consumer survey conducted by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), well over half (58 percent) of consumers gave the home office priority ranking.

This increased demand spells the end of the home office's second-class status. It should mark the death of such ugly and makeshift furnishings as a plank held up by a pair of metal file cabinets or double duty for the dining table. Different decorative approaches to home office design are required, however, depending on who uses the room and the type of work that is done there.

The sweet smell of success is infectious. Therefore, the office of an at-home executive should have the look and feel of permanence and stability, whether or not clients come to call. Dollars spent on quality furnishings, such as a mahogany desk and leather upholstery, are a worthwhile -- and tax deductible -- investment.

- In the movie Steel Magnolias, the character Clairee declares that, "The only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize." Well -- she's right!

One room that can really benefit from a little freshening up is the bathroom. By adding accents and accessories, we can make our bathrooms more inviting. Here are some cost effective solutions for accessorizing and revitalizing your bathroom.

Begin by picking a design theme or color scheme. (See tip number five-and-a-half for further advice.) This narrows the focus and will help you in the decision- making process.

Tip #1 -- Dry Colorfully

If the color of your bathroom is monotone, where everything is white -- walls, fixtures and counters -- changing the towels can bring an entirely new look to the room. The selection of towels to choose from is almost endless. There are vibrant, solid colors for a bold accent. Printed or embroidered towels are available in virtually any theme or style from traditional to tropical.

Consider purchasing a set of towels for seasonal use. You do not have to purchase all new towels, just enough that to create a visual difference between summer and winter. Two each of the bath towels, hand towels and washcloths may be enough. For the year-round towels, select neutral tones or solids that coordinate with your decor. For the seasonal accent towels, select lighter, brighter colors and patterns for summer and darker, richer tones and patterns for winter.

Tip #2 -- Dramatic Curtains

Shower curtains are one of the most dramatic accessories in the bathroom, and can change the room's look instantly. As with towels, the colors and patterns of curtains available seem virtually endless.

To create a warmer, more refined look, use fabric shower curtains with a printed or embroidered pattern. Vinyl shower curtains tend to be less expensive. They provide a more casual and sometimes whimsical tone to the bathroom like hula girls and an underwater scene with brightly colored tropical fish.

Tip #3 -- Jazz It Up

A bathroom "ensemble" typically includes a waste can, boutique tissue holder, tumbler, toothbrush holder, soap dish, lotion/soap dispenser and jar for incidental items. You do not have to purchase the entire set to perk up a tired bathroom. If you have limited space, consider just the waste can and tumbler.

When selecting a style, make sure it fits with the overall look of the room. There are a number of styles to choose from -- modern, traditional, whimsical and formal, as well as styles appropriate for a children's bathroom. Finishes include metallic and materials that mimic ceramic with patterns that range from floral to exotic.

Tip #4 -- Apply Yourself

There is a relatively new product on the market called Stick'n Stile that allows you to decorate your bathroom tile and tub area without replacing your current bathroom tile. What really makes this product unique, especially for those living in apartments, is the fact that it is removable. Stick'n Stile adds interest to tile walls by breaking up the space, and it is another way to add color to the bathroom.

Stick'n Stile is available in a variety of patterns that coordinate with other bathroom accessories. These design appliques can be applied safely to tile, shower doors and mirrors as well as plastic and fiberglass tub surrounds. No special adhesive is required. Simply peel off the paper backing and press in place. They are "permanent" until you decide it's time for them to go. Then, simply heat each tile with a hairdryer for a few minutes and peel it off.

Tip # 5 -- Artistic Reflection

Set the tone for the bathroom by treating it like any other room in the house. Hang art on the walls, or install a small shelf for displaying knickknacks or other treasured items.

Mirrors are a welcome addition in small bathrooms. A collection of small mirrors finished in decorative frames adds glamour to your bathroom. They also reflect light to make the space appear brighter and larger. Use an odd number of small mirrors -- one, three, five -- in combination with other artwork. Before hammering nails in the wall, place all the items on the floor until you have the arrangement you like.

For the do-it-yourselfer, purchase decorative picture frames and replace the glass with mirror. And remember -- mirrors and pictures should be hung at eye level.

Tip #5 1/2 -- Make Peace

For those living in apartments, accessorizing a bathroom can be challenging, especially if you do not like the existing colors. Don't work against what you've got, work with it. The same can be said for those with a bathroom they don't like but simply can not afford to remodel.

What if you prefer bright accent colors like candy-apple red, but have a bathroom filled with earth tones? You may have to compromise, but there is a way to work with the color scheme that is already there. Your favorite color probably won't work, so try a red with some earthiness to it, like terracotta or poppy. Find a color that pleases you that does not fight the colors already there.
